Description
The car we have today is quite possibly one of the most period correct homages of the 911 T/R ever created. As iconic Porsche models go, the 911 T/R is arguably one of the rarest. Offering a raw, visceral driving experience even today, with less than 40 ever believed to have been made. The T/R used elements of the 911 S including engine, brakes and suspension components, with weight savings made throughout by removal of unnecessary parts. After owning an original example, the owner decided to re-create a faithful homage of his beloved car. So began the journey to capture the magic of the of the iconic 1968 T/R. Using the original ‘Sports Purpose’ Factory specification brochure, this example has been painstakingly restored by Canford Classics. The car we have today started life as a 1967 911 T, ordered in the September of 1967 and registered in March 1968. The car was enjoyed for many years before being bought and imported to the UK by the current owner. At this point it was stripped of all non-required parts to the bare shell in preparation for a full re-build to T/R Sports Purpose specification. The shell was then crafted to exacting specifications to match the factory T/R shell. Including the removal of any non-original additions such as, the boot catch, cable and shielding pipe. During the re-build the client insisted on using parts that were no newer than they would have been on an original T/R. It was also a requirement to use only Porsche parts available via Sports Purpose. So began a five year long labour of love, tracking down every single required part from all corners of the globe. With all non-consumable components being period correct. Except for the windscreen washer pump which was from a later year. To meet the 1967 homologation rules for group 2 touring cars, rear seats needed to be added, Porsche designed a set out of a composite wood to aid lightness. In 1968 the rules were changed around the rear seats. This homage example has an original set of Porsche factory rear-seats installed, which were tracked down in Germany. Further supporting the level of detail taken when restoring this example. The engine is an original 911 S engine, fully rebuilt using all correct S specification parts. Improving the performance from the figures shown in the advert. The engine was found in the Netherlands and was sourced to ensure it was both original and period correct. This extended to the gear box with the insistence that both were in the factory at the time of the T/R being built. The gearbox fitted to this example is the same on the T/R. With a 904 main shaft it allows for easier gear ratio changes. Also fitted are lightweight rear axles and a 904 limited slip differential. Every sourced part has been tastefully refurbished, keeping any patina to add further charm and charisma to this beautiful example. Some highlights of the parts sourcing include a 1968 windscreen and the carpet set, originally from a T/R that completed the Targa Floria. The wheels are anodised in the original finish adorned with brand new tyres. Mechanically the car runs perfectly with all the braking system, suspension and engine rebuilt. The car was finished in 2021, then taken to Tech9 for a final check over and service with around 600 miles driven since completion of the build. Alongside the car comes a folder of invoices with an insight into of the completed work and parts purchased over this project that became a labour of love for the owner. This example has to be seen to be truly appreciated, with that in mind, please contact our classic team to arrange a viewing.
